Arizona Diamondbacks 2023 Campaign Thus Far–Gallen, Carroll in Hunt for Postseason Awards

Roughly 25% of the season is in the books, and the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks are in second place in the National League West division and 1.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division standings.

Star pitcher Zac Gallen is a +190 short favorite to win the 2023 NL Cy Young award, and rookie outfielder Corbin Carroll (+215) is the second favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award.

2023 Diamondbacks at a Glance

Arizona is off to a 27-20 start to their season and is playing above .500 ball at home and away from Chase Field. They’ve won nine series matchups this season and are wrapping up a nine-game road trip when they meet the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set beginning Monday.

2023 Diamondbacks Offense at a Glance

The Diamondbacks’ offense has been better than expected– the Snakes are tied with the Chicago Cubs in batting average, 3rd in the NL in runs scored (230) and strands the third-fewest runners in scoring position. Arizona has driven in an NL 4th-best 219 runs, but their 48 bombs rank 8th amongst NL teams.

  • OF Loudes Gurriel Jr is 11th in batting average
  • 1B Christian Walker is 17th in the NL in RBI (31), and 6th in home runs
  • Rookie OF Corbin Carroll leads the team with 13 swipes
  • C Gabriel Moreno is hitting .311 with a 1.2 WAR
  • 2B Ketel Marte is 2nd on the team in hits and total bases

2023 Diamondbacks Pitching at a Glance

The Diamondbacks’ pitching has been decent thus far. As a team, Arizona is 11th in the NL in team ERA, but their advanced metric xFIP (4.34) offers a slightly brighter picture. Walks and home runs have been the Arizona pitcher’s Achilles Heel; they allow the 6th most walks and 4th most bombs per nine innings pitched.

The Arizona bullpen hasn’t performed well at all–they rank 14th in team ERA, but like the overall ERA, the bullpen’s xFIP is much lower. The ‘pen is 8th in walks and 3rd in home runs allowed per nine innings pitched.

Gallen and Merril Kelly have 11 quality starts between them and 10 victories over their combined 19 starts as of Saturday, while the rest of the starting rotation has combined for four quality starts and four wins.

  • SP Ryne Nelson is 1-2 with a 5.28 ERA with seven home runs allowed over 46 frames
  • SP Brandon Pfaadt is 0-1 with a 7.28 ERA and has also allowed seven bombs over 20 innings
  • SP Tommy Henry is 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA but has allowed a dozen free passes and four home runs

Closer Andrew Chafin has six saves with three holds with a pair of blown saves, and Scott McGough and Miquel Castro lead the club with seven holds each.

  • RP Kyle Nelson has three holds but has yielded five walks and two bombs over 18 innings
  • RP Kevin Ginkel has allowed 16 hits, eight walks and two home runs over 20.1 innings

Arizona Diamondbacks Team Futures Odds

Arizona Diamondbacks to Make the Playoffs Yes (+180) No (-215)

If the Diamondbacks season were to end today, they would qualify for an NL Wild Card, but how far this team goes is really up to the pitching. Arizona has the sticks to get the job done, but the arms outside of Gallen and Kelly have been inconsistent, and the staff as a whole allows too many walks that lead to home runs. The bullpen is just average, and that is also a concern. Arizona likely won’t reach the playoffs, and if your risk tolerance is such that you can stomach paying the -210 juice, then NO (-215) is your best bet.

Arizona Diamondbacks Individual Awards Odds

NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll (+215)

Carroll is leading all rookies in WAR and runs scored while ranking 3rd in batting average while usually batting in the 3rd hole. Carroll plays every day and has just as good a rookie season as any other NL rookie. Los Angeles Dodgers OF James Outman is the favorite (+125), and the winner will likely come down to either Carroll or Outman. If Carroll continues his pace, this +215 will be long gone, so if you think Carroll will win the award, +215 is likely the best number you will get.

NL Cy Young Award Zac Gallen (+180)

In February, Gallen was +1400 to win the 2023 NL Cy Young award, and that number has fallen big time, and now Gallen is the current favorite (+180). Gallen is 6-2 with a 2.95 ERA, but his 2.88 xFIP indicates Gallen has been better than his already solid numbers suggest. His nearest competitor odds-wise is Atlanta Braves Spencer Strider (+225), and the flame-throwing Strider leads the NL in strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings. I loved +1400 for Gallen, and I still see Gallen winning this award; +180 still has some value, but it won’t be there long.
