Arizona Cardinals Kyler Murray Lands on PUP List, to Miss First Four Weeks of the Season

Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Jonathan Gannon announced Monday that star quarterback Kyler Murray would remain on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

The announcement means Murray will miss at least the season’s first four games. With the announcement, Gannon ends months of speculation surrounding Murray and the Cardinals’ plans for him this season.

Gannon told a group of reporters Monday that he considered Murray’s full body of work and said:

“I don’t think it’s anything he didn’t show us. I think it was just looking at OTAs and then training camp and the games and the full body of work, we just feel like this is the best way to go.”

Who is the Arizona Cardinals Starting Quarterback?

Gannon stopped short of naming a replacement for Murray, but the Cardinals acquiring former Cleveland Browns QB Joshua Dobbs this past week makes much more sense with the Murray news.

Gannon will decide between Dobbs or rookie Clayton Tune, and “I think it’s a competitive advantage for us going to Washington,”Gannon said.“But we’ll know who the starter is.”

How the Kyler Murray News Affects Their Betting Odds Against Washington

Arizona is a +7.0 away underdog at Barstool Arizona (+100) with a 39.5-point total when they open their season against the Washington Commanders on September 10.

The Murray news moved the number from where it opened at +6 to +7 points, while the total moved from 40.5 to 38.8 at PointsBet Arizona. Those are big moves for what was already a foregone conclusion, but either way, we missed the best number (+6), which might pique my interest in betting on Arizona to cover the spread.

Since 2015, 9% of NFL games have been won by a margin of seven points or more. This is the second most common outcome after wins by a margin of three points or more.

The Cardinals’ offense managed to find the end zone during the preseason, and they do have a pair of competent offensive players like wideouts Marquise Brown and James Dortch, plus running back James Connor scampered for 782 yards last season.

Finally, +7 is usually a good number, and it’s likely the best number you’ll ever see if you like the Cardinals to cover. Seven is a key number and one we should seriously consider, especially with Commanders’ QB Sam Howell making just his second career start.

You also should remember the bookies already assumed Murray wasn’t playing against Washington when they opened the game, and it took two months and yesterday’s announcement for that number to move one point in the Commanders’ direction.
